Introduction to Agnes Obel
Agnes Obel is a Danish singer-songwriter, composer and pianist. Born in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1980, she is best known for her critically acclaimed albums Philharmonics (2010), Aventine (2013) and Citizen of Glass (2016). Her music combines classical and pop, and often features her trademark harp sound.
Early Life and Career Beginnings
Obel began playing the piano at a young age, but it wasn’t until she began studying music at the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen that she began writing her own songs. She released her debut album Philharmonics in 2010. The album was an instant success, reaching the top of the charts in Denmark and Belgium, as well as the Top 10 in several other countries.
Breakthrough Success
Obel followed up Philharmonics with Aventine in 2013, which was met with critical acclaim. The album spawned the hit single “The Curse”, which was named one of the best songs of 2013 by several publications. In 2016, Obel released her third studio album Citizen of Glass, which was similarly praised by critics. The album featured the singles “Familiar” and “Red Virgin Soil”.

Obel has been awarded numerous awards for her music, including two Danish Music Awards for Best Album of the Year (2011 and 2016), three European Border Breakers Awards (2011-2013), four Danish Grammys (2011-2014) and two Danish Radio Awards (2012 & 2013).

Obel has been praised for her unique sound and songwriting ability. Her music has been featured on numerous TV shows and films, including Grey’s Anatomy, Orange is the New Black, The Good Wife and The Fault in Our Stars.
