Alborosie is a 44-year-old Italian-born reggae artist, producer and multi-instrumentalist. He has achieved success as a solo artist, as well as by collaborating with some of reggae’s top stars. Alborosie has worked with Gentleman, Eesah, Jah Cure, Ky-Mani Marley and many others. His music blends traditional Jamaican sounds with modern hip hop and dancehall.
Early Life and Career Beginnings
Alborosie was born Alberto D’Ascola in Marsala, Italy in 1976. He grew up in the city of Vittoria, Sicily where he learned to play several instruments such as guitar, bass, drums and keyboards. In 1999, he moved to Jamaica where he began his career as a sound engineer for well-known reggae label GeeJam Studios.
Breakthrough Success
In 2004, Alborosie released his debut album Soul Pirate which was a hit in Jamaica and Europe. His second album Escape from Babylon followed in 2009 and featured collaborations with Gentleman, Ky-Mani Marley and Jah Cure. The album peaked at number 7 on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart. Alborosie’s most successful album to date is 2011’s 2 Times Revolution which reached number 1 on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart. The album featured the hit single “Herbalist” which was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album.
Recent Projects
Alborosie has released several more albums since 2011 including Freedom & Fyah (2016), Unbreakable: Alborosie meets The Wailers United (2017) and Rockstone (2019). He recently collaborated with Eesah on the single “Tun Up Di Ting” which received significant radio airplay in Jamaica. Alborosie continues to tour extensively throughout Europe, North America and Africa.
