Angra: The Brazilian Heavy Metal Band
Angra is a Brazilian metal band formed in 1991. The group has gone through some major changes since its formation but has remained true to its heavy metal sound. The current lineup consists of Rafael Bittencourt on guitar and lead vocals, Kiko Loureiro on guitar and Marcelo Barbosa on drums. They are also joined by bassist Aquiles Priester and Felipe Andreoli on guitar. Their sound combines a mix of traditional metal and progressive metal with influences from classical music and Brazilian rhythms.
Early Career
Angra was formed by guitarist Rafael Bittencourt in 1991. He was joined by vocalist Andre Matos, bassist Luís Mariutti and drummer Ricardo Confessori. They released their debut album, Angels Cry, in 1993. The album was an instant success in Brazil and Europe, as it fused traditional metal with progressive elements. This album spawned classic songs such as “Carry On” and “Angels Cry”. In 1996 they released their second album Holy Land which was even more successful than its predecessor. It included hits like “Wuthering Heights” and “Make Believe”.
Recent Years
Over the years the lineup of the band has changed multiple times but they have always maintained their metal style. In 2006 they released Aurora Consurgens which featured guest appearances from Tarja Turunen, Angela Gossow and Doogie White. They followed this up with Aqua in 2010 and Secret Garden in 2014 which featured Tim “Ripper” Owens on vocals. The band is currently working on a new studio album which is expected to be released in 2021.

Angra has performed all over the world including Europe, North America and South America. They have also participated in several major festivals such as Wacken Open Air and Rock in Rio. Their live shows are known for their energy and are a perfect mix of classic metal songs mixed with some of their more recent tracks.
