Apocalyptica is a Finnish cello metal band from Helsinki consisting of four classically trained cellists and a drummer. The band is composed of cellists Eicca Toppinen, Paavo Lötjönen, Perttu Kivilaakso and drummer Mikko Sirén. They are best known for their collaborations with various popular metal singers such as Metallica, Gavin Rossdale and Lacey Sturm.
The beginnings
Apocalyptica was formed in 1993 when the four cellists were studying at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. They started out playing classical music but soon began to experiment with heavy metal covers. Their first album “Plays Metallica By Four Cellos” released in 1996 was an instant hit and featured some of Metallica’s biggest hits such as “Fade To Black” and “Master Of Puppets”.
Collaborations
Since then the band has gone on to collaborate with many other popular metal singers and bands including Metallica, Gavin Rossdale and Lacey Sturm. They have also performed at some of the world’s biggest festivals such as Wacken Open Air and Download Festival.
