The Success Story of America
Introduction
America is an American rock band that formed in London in 1970. The group's original lineup included founding members Dewey Bunnell, Gerry Beckley and Dan Peek. The group initially found success in the early 1970s with hits such as “A Horse with No Name” and “Sister Golden Hair.” Over the course of their career, America has released more than a dozen studio albums and charted many singles on the Billboard Hot 100. Some of their biggest hits include “Ventura Highway,” “Tin Man,” “Lonely People” and “You Can Do Magic.”
Early Years
Founding members Dewey Bunnell, Gerry Beckley and Dan Peek all grew up in Southern California in the 1960s. They met while attending London Central High School in London, England. The trio started playing together while they were still in high school and soon began writing their own songs. After graduating from high school in 1969, the three musicians decided to form a band and called themselves “America.”
Breakthrough Success
After signing to Warner Bros. Records in 1971, America released their self-titled debut album. The record spawned two hit singles: “A Horse with No Name” and “I Need You.” Both songs reached the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Their follow-up albums Homecoming (1972) and Hat Trick (1973) also spawned hit singles including “Ventura Highway” and “Sister Golden Hair.”
Later Career
In 1974, founding member Dan Peek left the group to pursue a solo career. Despite this setback, America continued to have success with subsequent albums such as Holiday (1974) and Hearts (1975). In 1977, Peek returned to the group for a one-off album titled Harbor. America continued to release albums throughout the 1980s and 1990s, with their most recent album being 2017's Here & Now.
Collaborations
Throughout their career, America has collaborated with a number of other artists including Emmylou Harris, Vince Gill and Dan Fogelberg. They have also been involved with various charitable causes including Project Angel Food and Earth Communications Office (ECO).
