Who is Belle and Sebastian?
Belle and Sebastian is a Scottish indie pop band formed in Glasgow in 1996. The group consists of Stuart Murdoch (vocals, guitar), Chris Geddes (keyboards), Richard Colburn (drums), Mick Cooke (trumpet and other instruments), Bob Kildea (bass guitar) and Sarah Martin (violin and vocals). They have released nine studio albums, two compilation albums and two live albums.
Career Highlights
The band has had a successful career since the release of their debut album Tigermilk in 1996. They have gone on to release several critically acclaimed albums such as If You're Feeling Sinister (1996), The Boy with the Arab Strap (1998), Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like a Peasant (2000) and Dear Catastrophe Waitress (2003). They have also collaborated with various artists such as Josh Ritter, Jenny Lewis and Norah Jones. In 2018 they released their ninth album How To Solve Our Human Problems.
Awards
Belle and Sebastian have been nominated for several awards throughout their career including the Mercury Music Prize for Tigermilk in 1997. They have also received two BRIT Award nominations for Best British Group in 2000 and Best British Album for The Boy with the Arab Strap in 1999. In 2010 they were inducted into the Scottish Music Hall of Fame.
Philanthropy
The band has been involved in various philanthropic activities over the years. In 2007 they launched the charity project “Help!” which aimed to help young people in Scotland gain access to music education.
