Early Life
Carly Elisabeth Simon was born on June 25th 1945 in New York City, the daughter of Richard L. Simon, co-founder of publishing house Simon & Schuster. She has a younger sister named Lucy and a brother named Joanna. Both her parents were Jewish immigrants from Germany and Austria. As a child, she learned to play the piano by ear. She attended the Riverdale Country School in the Bronx, New York.
Career
Simon began her professional music career in 1965 as part of a duo with her sister Lucy, releasing several singles that achieved moderate success. In 1971 she signed with Elektra Records as a solo artist, releasing her self-titled debut album that same year. The album featured the hit single “That’s the Way I’ve Always Heard It Should Be” which earned her critical acclaim and a Grammy nomination. Her follow-up albums saw even more success and she became one of the most successful female singer/songwriters of the era. In 1975 she released her fourth album “Playing Possum” which included the hit single “You’re So Vain”. The single became one of the biggest hits of the decade and earned her a Grammy Award for best female pop vocal performance. She has collaborated with various artists throughout her career including James Taylor, Cat Stevens, Don Henley and Aerosmith.
Awards & Accomplishments
Simon has won numerous awards throughout her career including two Grammys, an Academy Award for Best Song (for “Let The River Run” from Working Girl) and a Golden Globe for Best Original Song (for “Let The River Run”). She was also inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1994. In 2003 she was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Music from Berklee College of Music.
Personal Life
Simon has been married twice; first to James Taylor from 1972 to 1983, then to Richard Koehler from 1987-2007. She has two children; Sally Taylor (born in 1974) and Ben Taylor (born in 1977). She currently resides in Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts.
