Who Is Cat Power?

Cat Power is the stage name of Chan Marshall, an acclaimed American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and occasional actor. She began her career in the early 1990s, releasing her debut album Dear Sir in 1995 and quickly rose to prominence in the indie music scene.

Early Life

Marshall was born in Atlanta, Georgia on January 21, 1972. She was raised by her father Charles, a blues musician. Marshall originally wanted to pursue a career in acting and moved to New York City in the early 1990s.

Music Career

Marshall's debut album Dear Sir was released in 1995 and received critical acclaim from music critics. Her follow-up album Myra Lee was released in 1996 to similar praise. Over the next few years she continued to release critically acclaimed albums including Moon Pix (1998), The Covers Record (2000) and You Are Free (2003). Her 2007 album The Greatest marked a major shift in her sound as she moved away from her folk roots to more of a rock influenced style.
