Who is Chris De Burgh?

Chris De Burgh is a British-Irish musician and singer-songwriter. Born Christopher John Davison in Venado Tuerto, Argentina on October 15th, 1948, he has achieved international success with hit singles such as “Lady in Red”, “Don’t Pay the Ferryman” and “The Lady in Red”. A gifted musician and a prolific songwriter, he is known for his folk-rock sound, which incorporates elements of rock, pop and country. He has released over 20 studio albums since 1976, with several of them achieving gold and platinum status.

Early Life and Career

De Burgh was born to an Irish father and a Scottish mother. His family moved to Ireland when he was two years old and he grew up in County Wexford. He started playing music at an early age, learning to play the guitar from the age of seven. He moved to London at the age of 18 to pursue his musical career. He released his debut album Far Beyond These Castle Walls in 1976, followed by Spanish Train and Other Stories in 1975. The album was a commercial success and propelled him to international fame with the single “Lady in Red” becoming an instant hit worldwide. In 1978, he released his third album At the End of a Perfect Day which also achieved gold status.

Later Career

De Burgh continued to release successful albums throughout the 1980s and 1990s. In 1983, he released Man on the Line and Top Ten hit “Missing You”. The album was certified gold in the UK and spawned other hits such as “High on Emotion”. He also released Into The Light in 1986, which was certified platinum in the UK. In 1988, he released Flying Colours which also achieved platinum status in the UK with hit singles such as “Don’t Pay the Ferryman” and “The Lady in Red”. His later albums such as Power of Ten (1994), Quiet Revolution (1999) and Timing Is Everything (2002) were also commercially successful.

Recent Projects

De Burgh has continued to tour extensively throughout the 2000s and 2010s with his latest studio album Footsteps 2 being released in 2014. He has also collaborated with other artists such as Sting and Alison Krauss on numerous projects. In 2020, he released an EP titled A Better World featuring covers of classic songs such as Bob Dylan’s “Forever Young” to raise money for charity.
