Who are Damas Gratis? Damas Gratis is an Argentine ska music band, formed in 2004 by brothers Santiago and Damian Ugarte. This ska band is a part of the Argentinian musical phenomenon known as "Music Chabada". They gained popularity in Argentina with their hit single "Yo Tengo una Flauta".Early Life and Career The two brothers, Santiago and Damian Ugarte, were born in General Pico, La Pampa. They both started playing music at a young age, learning to play the guitar from their father. After high school, Santiago moved to Buenos Aires to pursue his love for music and enrolled at the National University of Music for classical guitar courses. In 2003, he released his first album, "A Corazón Abierto", which was well-received.Breakthrough In 2004, Santiago and Damian decided to form a band with their friend Marcelo Core. They named the group Damas Gratis, which means "free ladies" in English. The group's first single, "Yo Tengo una Flauta", became a hit in Argentina and made them famous instantly. They followed it up with their first album, "En Vivo", which was released in 2005. The album included hit singles such as "No Puedo Vivir Sin Ti", "Cariño Mío" and "Chiquilla Bonita".Recent Work In 2007, the group released their second studio album titled "Chabada de Oro". It was a big success and was followed by a tour across Latin America. In 2011, they released their third album, "El Reencuentro", which charted at number one on the Argentina charts. The album featured guest appearances from some of the biggest artists in Latin American music such as Marc Anthony, Ricardo Arjona and Los Auténticos Decadentes. In 2017, they released their fourth album, "La Historia del Presente". It featured some of their most popular songs such as "Volverte a Ver", "Por Tí" and "Hasta que Amanezca".Awards and Achievements Damas Gratis has won several awards and accolades over the years. In 2012, they won Best Argentine Band at the Latin Grammy Awards. In 2016, they were nominated for Best Latin Pop Album at the Grammy Awards for their fourth studio album “La Historia del Presente” and were nominated again in 2018 for Best Tropical Latin Album for their fifth studio album “De Alguna Forma”. They have also won numerous awards from MTV Latin America such as Best Pop Artist Group in 2012 and Best Rock Artist Group in 2014.Personal Life The two brothers are married and have four children between them: Santiago has two sons (Santiago Jr. and Matias) and Damian has two daughters (Agustina and Valentina). The group is currently on hiatus but continue to perform live shows when time allows.
