Dan + Shay are a country/pop singing duo who reached further and beyond when they released their track Tequila. The song hit the number 1 spot in the US country charts, US country airplay charts, and Canada's country charts. Early Days Daniel Smyer was born in Wexford, Pennsylvania, and James Shay Mooney in Natural Dam, Arkansas. After receiving his first guitar in sixth grade, Daniel went on to play in various bands. One such band was the rock/emo band "Transition." The Vocalist, James Shay, moved to Nashville and was keen to start a music career. He would upload cover songs to YouTube, and they reached a large following over time. Later, one of his sister's contacts who knew T. Pain sent the rapper some songs. A meeting was set, and Daniel signed with Nappy Boy Entertainment's label. Career Dan & Shay's meeting began inside a tent. The guitarist and friends lived in a house without heating and constructed a massive tent out of sheets. One evening a friend brought Shay over to hang out, and from there, the twosome jammed together all night. After realizing they had formed a music connection, they began writing together. One of their early projects was teaming up with Jessie Fraser. The trio wrote a song for the country artist Rascal Flatts, and the music was put on hold. Not long after, the pair gained a contract with Warner Chappell Music. In 2013 their debut single "19 you +me" was released, and after that, the album "where it all began." The following year the twosome performed at the prestigious Grand Old Opry and received a nomination for vocal duo of the year. Since then, the pair have collaborated with artists such as Kelly Clarkson, Justin Bieber, and Lindsey Stirling. To this date, Dan + Shay has gone on to record four studio albums and received numerous awards. One such award was a Grammy for "Best country duo performance with their track Tequila.
