Introduction

Daughter is a three-piece indie-folk band from England consisting of Elena Tonra (vocals/guitar), Igor Haefeli (guitar) and Remi Aguilella (drums). The band has been creating mesmerizing music since 2010 and has released two studio albums, If You Leave in 2013 and Not To Disappear in 2015.

Early Life and Career Beginnings

Elena Tonra was born on January 15th 1990 in London, England. She moved to Brighton in 2009 to attend university and it was here that she met guitarist Igor Haefeli. The pair began writing music together and soon after they were joined by Remi Aguilella who had moved to Brighton from France. In 2010 Daughter released their debut single ""His Young Heart"" which was quickly followed by their debut EP ""The Wild Youth"" in 2011.

Breakthrough with If You Leave

In 2013 Daughter released their debut studio album ""If You Leave"" through 4AD records. The album features the singles ""Smother"" and ""Youth"" which received huge amounts of airplay on BBC Radio 1. The album shot to number 16 on the UK Albums Chart and won a European Border Breakers Award.

Not To Disappear and Later Releases

In 2015 Daughter released their second studio album ""Not To Disappear"" which featured the singles ""Doing the Right Thing"" and ""How"". The album charted at number 8 in the UK Albums Chart and was nominated for a Mercury Prize. In 2017 the group released their third EP ""Music From Before The Storm"", which was written as a companion piece to the video game Life Is Strange: Before The Storm. This EP featured tracks ""Burn It Down"" and ""Hope"".

Style and Influences

Daughter's style draws influence from genres such as indie-folk, dream pop, shoegaze and post-rock. Their sound incorporates elements of acoustic guitar, synths, drum machines and samples to create a unique fusion of styles. They have cited artists such as PJ Harvey, Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell and Radiohead as influences on their sound.
