Introduction
David Jon Gilmour is a British musician, singer, songwriter and record producer. He is best known as the former guitarist, vocalist and lyricist of the legendary progressive rock band Pink Floyd. Along with his work with Pink Floyd, David has released four solo studio albums as well as collaborative works with other artists.
Early Life
David was born on 6th March 1946 in Cambridge, England. His father Douglas Gilmour was a senior lecturer in zoology at the University of Cambridge. His mother Sylvia Wilson worked as a film editor at BBC. David had two siblings – a younger brother named Rick and an elder sister named Clare.
Career
In December 1967, David joined Pink Floyd as a bassist and later became their lead guitarist and backing vocalist. He wrote some of their most popular songs like ‘Shine On You Crazy Diamond’ and ‘Wish You Were Here’ among others. He also sang lead vocals on many of their songs including ‘Comfortably Numb’, ‘Time’, ‘Money’, ‘Learning to Fly’ and ‘High Hopes’.
Achievements
In 2005, David was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of Pink Floyd. In 2008 he was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by Queen Elizabeth II for his services to music. He has won several awards including three BRIT Awards, two Ivor Novello Awards and four Grammy Awards.
Personal Life
David married Ginger Murray in 1975. They have three children named Alice, Matthew and Gabriel together. They divorced in 1990 and two years later he married Polly Samson with whom he has a daughter named Romany.
