Who is D'Banj?

D'Banj, real name Oladapo Daniel Oyebanjo, is a Nigerian singer-songwriter, entrepreneur, philanthropist and television producer. He is known for his success in Afrobeat and hip hop music. D'Banj is a prominent figure in the African music industry and has been credited with helping to bring Afrobeat to the mainstream. He is also a brand ambassador for Guinness Nigeria and Samsung Mobile.

Early Life and Career

D'Banj was born on June 9, 1980 in Zaria, Nigeria. He studied at the Nigerian Military School and then went on to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Lagos. After graduating with honors, he worked as an engineer for a few years before deciding to pursue music full-time. In 2004, he signed a record deal with Don Jazzy's Mo' Hits label which launched his career. His first single 'Tongolo' was released in 2005 and was an instant hit in Nigeria. Since then, he has gone on to release numerous albums and singles such as 'Oliver Twist', 'Fall in Love', 'Emergency', 'Ikébè', 'Mr Endowed', 'Give It To Me', 'Something for Something' and many more.

Collaborations

D'Banj has collaborated with a number of international artists including Kanye West, Big Sean, Naeto C, Don Jazzy, Theophilus London and others. He has also been featured on songs by Wizkid, Flavour, Dr Sid and Tiwa Savage.

Awards and Accolades

D'Banj has won numerous awards throughout his career including Best African Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards in 2006, Best International Act: Africa at the BET Awards 2011, Artist of the Year at the MTV Africa Music Awards 2014, Best Male act at the MTV Africa Music Awards 2016 and several others. He was also nominated for a Grammy Award in 2013 for his collaboration with Kanye West on the song 'All Of The Lights'.

Philanthropy

In 2015 D'Banj founded the D'banj Records Foundation which seeks to assist young people from disadvantaged backgrounds achieve their dreams through education and entrepreneurship programmes. He is also a patron of One Percent Project which provides educational scholarships to children from poor backgrounds in Nigeria.
