Who is Deborah Cox?

Deborah Cox is a Canadian R&B singer, songwriter, and actress. She was born on July 13, 1974 in Toronto, Canada. She is best known for her two-time platinum-selling single, “Nobody’s Supposed to Be Here”, and her role in the musical “Aida”.

Early Life

Cox began singing at age 12 in church choirs and performing in school plays. As a teenager, she was a part of a rhythm and blues band called 'Natural Progression'. She later joined the Toronto-based group 'Luv Bizness' which opened doors to an independent record deal.

Career

Cox's career started in 1995 when she was signed to Arista Records. Her self-titled debut album spawned the hit single “Sentimental”, which reached number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In 1998, she released her second album “One Wish” which spawned the hit single “Nobody’s Supposed to Be Here”. The single went on to become one of the longest running number one hits of all time, spending 14 weeks at number one on Billboard’s R&B chart.

Acting Career

Cox made her Broadway debut in 2003 as Mimi in the musical “Rent”. In 2006 she originated the role of Aida in the musical “Aida” which earned her a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress. She has also appeared in several movies including “Love & Basketball” (2000) and “Musical Chairs” (2012).

Awards & Achievements

Cox has won numerous awards including six Juno Awards (the Canadian equivalent of the Grammys), two NAACP Image Awards, and an MTV Video Music Award. She has also been nominated for four Grammy Awards.

Personal Life & Legacy

Cox is married to music producer Lascelles Stephens. They have two sons named Kaila and Isaiah. She is currently working on her fifth studio album which is due to be released in late 2020.
