Deftones: Nu-Metal Since 1988 Deftones is an American alternative metal band from Sacramento, California. Formed in 1988, the group consists of Chino Moreno (lead vocals and guitar), Stephen Carpenter (guitar), Frank Delgado (keyboards and turntables), Abe Cunningham (drums and percussion) and Chi Cheng (bass). Deftones are known for their unique blend of heavy metal and shoegaze elements. They have released seven studio albums to date, with their latest being 2016's 'Gore'. Early Career In 1988, Chino Moreno and Abe Cunningham formed Deftones after meeting at a local party in Sacramento. The two friends soon recruited Stephen Carpenter on guitar and later recruited bassist Chi Cheng. The band released their debut album 'Adrenaline' in 1995. It was met with critical acclaim, as it was a mix of metal and alternative sounds that had never been heard before. Breakthrough Success Deftones' breakthrough success came with the release of their second album 'Around the Fur' in 1997. The album spawned two singles 'My Own Summer (Shove It)' and 'Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)', which were both commercial successes. The band gained a wider audience with their third album 'White Pony' in 2000. The album featured hit singles 'Change (In the House of Flies)' and 'Back to School (Mini Maggit)', which both charted on the Billboard Hot 100. Recent Work Since then, Deftones have released four more albums; 'Deftones' (2003), 'Saturday Night Wrist' (2006), 'Diamond Eyes' (2010) and 'Gore' (2016). The band has also had several collaborations with other artists such as Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst, Maynard James Keenan of Tool, Max Cavalera of Sepultura and Lil Wayne. In 2019 they released a new EP titled 'Black Stallion'. Awards & Accolades Throughout their career, Deftones have been nominated for three Grammy Awards for their music. They won the Grammy for Best Metal Performance for the song 'Elite' in 2001. They were also included in VH1's list of the 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock at number 85 in 2012. In 2014 they were inducted into the Kerrang! Hall of Fame.
