The Success Story of Dokken
Who Are Dokken?
Dokken is an American heavy metal group from Los Angeles, California. Formed in 1979 by vocalist Don Dokken, guitarist George Lynch, bassist Jeff Pilson, and drummer Mick Brown, the band had a string of platinum and gold records throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. Their best-known songs include “Alone Again”, “Dream Warriors”, and “In My Dreams”.
Early Years
Don Dokken was born in 1958 in Los Angeles and began playing music as a teenager. He met George Lynch while they were attending San Francisco State University and they began jamming together. The two eventually formed a band called Airborn with bassist Jeff Pilson and drummer Mick Brown. The band moved to Los Angeles where they changed their name to Dokken and began playing shows at local clubs.
Rise to Fame
In 1983, Dokken signed a deal with Elektra Records and released their debut album Breaking the Chains. The album was a commercial success, reaching number 66 on the Billboard 200 chart and selling over 500,000 copies worldwide. The band followed up with 1984’s Tooth and Nail which was even more successful, reaching number 11 on the Billboard 200 chart. The album spawned the hit singles “Alone Again” and “Just Got Lucky” which helped to further increase their popularity.
Later Career
The band continued to release albums throughout the 1980s and early 1990s with mixed success. In 1988, they released their most successful album to date Back for the Attack which featured the hit single “Dream Warriors”. The band went on hiatus in 1989 due to creative differences but reunited in 1993 for a one-off show before disbanding once again in 1994. They reunited again in 1997 for another one-off show before officially reuniting in 2003. Since then they have released two live albums and continue to tour regularly.
Legacy
Dokken is considered one of the most influential heavy metal bands of all time. They were one of the first bands to pioneer the sound of “glam metal” which would later become popular in the 1980s with bands like Bon Jovi and Motley Crue. They have also collaborated with other artists such as Warrant and White Lion.
