Who is Ebiet G. Ade?

Ebiet G. Ade (born Abid Ghoffar Aboe Dja'far) is an iconic Indonesian singer, songwriter and poet from Yogyakarta. He is known for his melancholic ballads which often focus on topics such as love, nature and religion. His first album, Berita Kepada Kawan, was released in 1980 and immediately gained him fame across Indonesia.

Early Life & Career

Ade was born in 1943 in Yogyakarta. He began playing guitar in the 1960s and soon developed a unique style of fingerpicking. He was inspired by the folk and pop music of his time, as well as the works of Bob Dylan and Simon & Garfunkel. In 1980, he released his first album Berita Kepada Kawan which featured his signature melancholic ballads. The album was an instant hit, garnering him national fame. He went on to release several more successful albums throughout the 1980s and 1990s.

Legacy

Ade's work has had a lasting impact on Indonesian music. His songs are often covered by other singers and are widely recognized by Indonesians of all ages. He has been cited as an influence by numerous other Indonesian musicians, including Iwan Fals, Tompi and Glenn Fredly. In 2006, he received the prestigious Anugerah Musik Indonesia Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to Indonesian music.
