Erica Monique Campbell is an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and actress. A member of the award-winning gospel duo Mary Mary with her sister Tina Campbell, she has achieved both commercial and critical success. She has released four solo albums between 2005 and 2017 and has collaborated with some of the biggest names in music such as Amerie, R. Kelly, Kirk Franklin, and Missy Elliott.
Early Life
Erica was born in Inglewood, California in 1976 to Thomasina Atkins and Eddie Akins. She was raised alongside her four siblings by their mother after their father died when Erica was quite young. Erica attended Inglewood High School where she participated in cheerleading, track and field, and gymnastics. In 1993 she graduated from high school and went on to attend Los Angeles City College where she majored in drama and minored in music.
Career Beginnings
In 2000 Erica formed the gospel duo Mary Mary with her sister Tina. They released their self-titled debut album which quickly became a commercial success due to the success of its first single “Shackles (Praise You).” The album was certified double platinum in the US due to its immense success. The group went on to release four more albums as well as several extended plays all of which achieved both commercial and critical success.
Solo Career
In 2005 Erica released her debut solo album titled “My Piece” which was a blend of gospel, pop, hip-hop, soul and R&B music. The album spawned two hit singles “Be Happy” and “A Little More Jesus” which earned her a Grammy Award for Best Gospel Performance in 2006. In 2014 she released her second album “Help” which featured collaborations with some of the biggest names in music such as Missy Elliott and Kirk Franklin. The album earned her multiple Grammy nominations including Best Gospel Album in 2015. Her third album “Help 2.0” was released in 2017 and received critical acclaim from critics who praised its mix of gospel and pop/soul elements.
Acting Career
In addition to music Erica has also appeared in various films such as “The Gospel” (2005), “Sparkle” (2012) and “Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit” (1993). She has also had guest roles on television series such as “The Parkers” (2000) and “The Steve Harvey Show” (1996). She recently starred in the reality show “Mary Mary” which followed the lives of the duo Mary Mary and their families.
Personal Life
Erica is married to entrepreneur Warryn Campbell III with whom she has three children. She is a devout Christian who believes that faith is an integral part of her life.
