Donald McKinley Glover, better known as Gambino, is a multi-award winning American music artist, songwriter and actor. He has released numerous hit albums and singles throughout his career and has been nominated for a total of 81 awards, winning 34 of them.
Early Life
Born in California on September 25, 1983, Gambino was raised in Georgia by his mother and grandmother. He found himself interested in music from a young age, teaching himself to play the piano at 5 years old. Later on, he attended college at New York University’s Tisch School of Arts where he studied dramatic writing with a minor in music. It was during these years that he started to gain recognition in the entertainment industry when his YouTube series “Derrick Comedy” became popular.
Career
After graduating college in 2006, Gambino released his first album “Camp” in 2011. This album received positive reviews and earned him two Grammy Award nominations for Best Rap Album and Best Rap Performance. Since then he has released four additional studio albums, “Because the Internet” (2013), “Awaken My Love!” (2016), “3.15.20” (2020) and “Donald Glover Presents” (2020). In 2020, he released a single titled “This is America” which won four Grammy Awards including Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Music Video and Best Rap/Sung Performance.
Acting Career
Aside from music, Gambino has also had success in acting. He starred in the hit comedy series “Community” from 2009 to 2014. In 2016, he starred in the movie “The Lazarus Effect” alongside Olivia Wilde and Mark Duplass. He also had roles in the films “Spider-Man: Homecoming” (2017) and “The Martian” (2015). He currently stars in the FX series “Atlanta” which he created, wrote and produced.
