Garou is a Canadian-born French singer and songwriter known for his powerful baritone voice, incredible stage presence and numerous hits. He was born Pierre Garand on June 26, 1972 in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada. He first gained attention as the runner-up in the 1998 edition of the French version of Pop Idol, Star Academy. After the show ended he quickly established himself as one of the most successful male singers in France. He has released seven albums, all of which achieved platinum status in France.

Early Life

Garou grew up in a musical family - his mother was a music teacher while his father was an accordionist. He started singing at age three. At age six he began studying classical guitar at the Sherbrooke Conservatory of Music and continued to study music until the age of 18.

Career

In 1998 Garou auditioned for the French version of Pop Idol, Star Academy, and made it to the top two before being eliminated. Despite this setback he quickly gained a huge following in France and went on to have a successful career as a singer and songwriter. He has released seven studio albums, all of which achieved platinum status in France. His most popular songs include “Belle”, “Seul”, “Guitare et tambour”, “Je N’Attendais Que Vous”, “Sous le Vent” and “Aimer D’Amour”. He has also collaborated with various artists including Celine Dion, Lara Fabian and Roch Voisine.
