Jessie Reyez is a remarkable singer/songwriter with a unique voice and original style. True to herself, the songwriter shares her past experiences of heartbreak. Early Days She was born in Toronto, Canada, to Colombian parents. As a child, Jessie was surrounded by music. Her brother listened to reggae, and her father Cumbia, he also played guitar, she was captivated by the melodies, and he taught her how to play the instrument. As a teen, she broke up with her long-term boyfriend, it was a painful period of her life, and she used writing and music as a tool to expel the hurt. By the time she finished high school, the songwriter was confident she wanted a music career. Career The family moved to Florida, and Jessie moved back and forth between the two countries. Busking and singing at open mic nights became regular, including uploading covers to YouTube. After coming to the attention of Doc Kenny, a Canadian producer, he gave her much-sought-after advice. In 2014 while in Canada, she gained a place at the “The Academy of Arts-remix project.” King Louie, the rapper, was visiting the center and scheduled a meeting after hearing Jessie’s vocals. From there, the two recorded a song together, “living in the sky.” A buzz was rapidly surrounding Jessie’s music. In 2017 she was invited on tour as the support act for the rapper “Party Next door.” Her single “Figures” was air played on Zane Lowe’s radio show and quickly moved to other radio stations. It successfully hit the Canadian hot 100 charts. The same year, she dropped her EP, Kiddo, and signed a record deal with Island records soon after. The singer/songwriter has been nominated for various accolades and won multiple awards, including a Grammy nomination for Best Urban contemporary album in 2020.
