Who is Jill Scott?

Jill Scott is an American singer-songwriter, model, poet and actress. Born in 1972 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she rose to fame with her 2000 debut album Who Is Jill Scott?, which spawned the hit single “A Long Walk”. Scott has since released five studio albums and won two Grammy Awards.

Early Life

Jill Scott was born in 1972 in North Philadelphia. She was raised by her mother, Joyce, who was a school administrator at the Philadelphia High School for Girls. Scott attended Temple University for two years, where she studied secondary education before dropping out to pursue a career as a spoken word artist.

Career

In 1999, Scott was discovered by Amir “Questlove” Thompson of The Roots and signed to his label Okayplayer Records. Her debut album Who Is Jill Scott? was released in 2000 and spawned the hit single “A Long Walk”. The album was certified platinum by the RIAA and earned her two Grammy Award nominations. In 2001, she released her second album Experience: Jill Scott 826+. The album featured the singles “Gimme” and “The Way” and earned her four Grammy Award nominations. In 2004, Scott released her third album Beautifully Human: Words and Sounds Vol. 2 which featured the singles “My Love” and “It’s Love”. The album earned her another two Grammy Award nominations. In 2007, Scott released her fourth studio album The Real Thing: Words and Sounds Vol. 3 which featured the singles “Hate on Me” and “Crown Royal”. The album earned her another two Grammy Award nominations. In 2011, she released her fifth studio album The Light of the Sun which featured the singles “So in Love” and “So Gone (What My Mind Says)”. The album earned her another two Grammy Award nominations.
