Kattassery Joseph K J Yesudas is an Indian singer and composer with a career spanning more than five decades. He has been awarded the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan by the Government of India for his immense contribution to Indian music. He is also known as Gana Gandharvan and has recorded more than 50,000 songs in various Indian languages including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Bengali and Gujarati. His repertoire includes devotional, classical, light music and film songs in these languages.
Early Life and Career
Kattassery Joseph K J Yesudas was born in Fort Kochi, Kerala on January 10th 1940. He began learning Carnatic music at the age of 5 and started performing in public at the age of 10. He graduated from the R.L.V Music Academy in Thrippunithura in 1957 and went on to study at the Swathi Thirunal College of Music in Thiruvananthapuram. He entered the film industry as a playback singer in 1961 with the movie Kaalpadukal directed by P. Subramaniam.
Notable Works
Yesudas has composed music for more than 50 Malayalam movies and has also composed a Sanskrit opera called 'Namukku Parkkan'. His popular duets include those with S Janaki and P Susheela. His collaborations with A R Rahman include 'Kannum Kannum Nokia' from Minsara Kanavu (1997), 'Porale Porale' from Karuthamma (1994) and 'Thee Thee' from Mudhalvan (1999). He has won multiple awards including seven National Film Awards for Best Male Playback Singer, twenty-one Filmfare Awards South for Best Male Playback Singer and Kerala State Film Awards for Best Playback Singer sixteen times.
