Kevin Abstract is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, director and photographer from Houston, Texas. He is best known for being the founder and leader of Brockhampton. His music is characterized by its eclectic range of genres and styles which include rap, R&B and even jazz.
Early Life and Career Beginnings
Kevin Abstract was born Ian Simpson in 1996 in Corpus Christi, Texas. He grew up in Houston before moving to Los Angeles at the age of 16. In 2014 he released his debut mixtape 'The Yellow Album' which was followed by his album 'MTV1987' in 2015. This album was critically acclaimed and propelled him to fame among the music scene.
Rise to Fame with Brockhampton
In 2015 Kevin Abstract formed the hip-hop collective 'Brockhampton' alongside other members including Romil Hemnani, Jabari Manwa and Matt Champion. Together they released several albums including 'Saturation I', 'Saturation II', 'Saturation III' and 'Iridescence'. The collective has been credited for bringing a new sound to the rap genre with their unique style and sound. In 2018 Kevin Abstract released his third solo album 'Arizona Baby'. The album was well received by fans and critics alike and was praised for its introspective lyrics and production.
Achievements
In 2018 Kevin Abstract won the MTV Video Music Award for Best Editing for his song 'Tonya'. He has also been nominated for several other awards including the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album and the BET Hip Hop Award for Best Group.
