Who is Matisyahu?

Matisyahu is an American singer-songwriter whose music blends traditional Jewish themes with reggae, rock, and hip-hop influences. He is best known for his 2004 single “King Without a Crown” which was a top 40 hit in the United States. He has released five studio albums as well as two live albums and several EPs. His live shows are renowned for their energetic stage presence and positive vibes.

Early Life

Matisyahu was born Matthew Paul Miller on June 30, 1979 in West Chester, Pennsylvania. He grew up in White Plains, New York, where he attended Hebrew school and confessed to being a bit of a troublemaker. At the age of 17, he moved to Israel where he studied at a yeshiva (a Jewish religious school) and eventually joined the Chabad-Lubavitch Hasidic community. It was during this period of his life that he began writing music.

Musical Career

In 2004, Matisyahu released his debut album Shake off the Dust…Arise. The album received positive reviews from critics and featured the single “King Without a Crown” which became a popular radio hit. His follow-up album Youth was released in 2006 and featured more of an electronic sound than his previous release. It also featured the singles “Time of Your Song” and “Jerusalem” which both proved popular with fans. His third studio album Light was released in 2009 and marked a return to a more acoustic sound. The album spawned the singles “One Day” and “So Hi So Lo” which both became hits on the US Billboard charts.

Recent Years

In recent years Matisyahu has continued to record music as well as tour all over the world. In 2011, he released Spark Seeker which featured collaborations with several different producers including Skrillex, Diplo, and Lustre Kings. In 2013 he released Akeda which featured an even more diverse sound than his previous releases. He has also collaborated with several other artists including Toots & The Maytals, Akon, Ace Hood, and Mayer Hawthorne. In addition to music, Matisyahu has also dabbled in acting appearing in several TV shows and movies such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent, CSI: Miami, and The Sitter.
