Early Life
Mystikal was born on September 22, 1970 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Since childhood, he has had a passion for music. He would perform in talent shows as a child and take part in rap battles with friends. When he was 17 years old he dropped out of high school to pursue a career in rap music.
Career Beginnings
Mystikal began his career as part of the record label No Limit Records in 1995. His debut album, Mind of Mystikal, was released in 1996 and was well-received by critics. The album featured guest appearances from other No Limit Records artists such as Snoop Dogg and Master P. His second album Unpredictable was released in 1997 and featured the hit single “Here I Go”.
Rise to Fame
Mystikal rose to fame in 2000 with the release of his third album Let's Get Ready. The album spawned the hit single “Shake Ya Ass” which became a worldwide hit and was later featured in the film Charlie's Angels. In 2001 he released the album Tarantula which featured the single “Danger (Been So Long)” featuring Nivea. The single became another international hit for Mystikal.
Later Career
In 2003 Mystikal released his fifth album Prince of the South… The Hits which featured previously released singles. In 2006 he released his sixth album Ghetto Fabulous which debuted at number 8 on the Billboard 200 chart. In 2010 he released his seventh album Original which featured collaborations with Pharrell Williams, Lil Wayne, and Outkast. He returned to music in 2014 with the release of his eighth album Original.
Later Years
In 2017, Mystikal took a hiatus from music to focus on acting. He appeared in several films including Sleepless (2017) and Pitch Perfect 3 (2017). He also appeared as a guest judge on the TV show The Rap Game (2017). In 2019 he returned to music with the release of his ninth studio album Dare 2 Do It.
Legacy
Mystikal is considered one of the most important southern rappers of all time. His influence can be heard in subsequent generations of rappers from the south such as Lil Wayne and T.I.. He has been honored with numerous awards including a Grammy Award nomination in 2000 for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for “Shake Ya Ass”. He remains an active musician today.
