The Scotsmen Who Brought Us Rock & Roll

Nazareth is a Scottish rock band formed in 1968 that had a major influence on rock and roll culture. The band was formed by Dan McCafferty (vocals), Darrell Sweet (drums), Pete Agnew (bass guitar), Manny Charlton (guitar), and Billy Rankin (guitar). They have had several hit singles throughout their career and have also been cited as an influence for many artists in the hard rock genre. They are perhaps best known for their hit single, “Love Hurts”, which is still widely popular today.

The Early Years

Nazareth began as a pub rock band in Dunfermline, Scotland in 1968. They were initially called The Shadettes, but changed their name to Nazareth in 1969. They signed a record deal with Mountain Records in 1971 and released their debut album, Nazareth. The album featured the single “Dear John”, which reached number six on the UK Singles Chart. This success led to a series of successful albums throughout the 70s and 80s.

Success & Recognition

In 1974, Nazareth released their fourth album, Razamanaz. It was a chart success and included the hit single “Broken Down Angel” which reached number eight on the UK Singles Chart. Their fifth album Hair of the Dog was released the following year and reached number seven on the US Billboard 200 chart. The title track became one of their most successful singles reaching number one on the US Mainstream Rock chart. Nazareth also released several other successful albums such as Close Enough for Rock 'n' Roll (1976) and Expect No Mercy (1977), both of which reached the top ten on the UK Albums Chart.

Collaborations & Later Years

During their career, Nazareth collaborated with various artists including singer-songwriter Roger Daltrey of The Who and guitarist Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin. In 1978 they released a live album with Daltrey titled No Mean City which included two singles “Star” and “Love Leads To Madness”. In 1986 they released Cinema with Page which featured covers of Led Zeppelin songs such as “Immigrant Song” and “Rock And Roll”.In recent years Nazareth has continued to tour extensively in Europe and across the globe. They continue to release new music and are still regarded as one of the most influential bands in rock music.
