Who is Ne-Yo? Ne-Yo is an American singer, songwriter, and record producer from Las Vegas, Nevada. He was born Shaffer Chimere Smith on October 18th, 1979. He has achieved commercial success in both the R&B and pop music genres. His debut single “So Sick” was a major hit in 2006, reaching the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100. Early Life Ne-Yo was born Shaffer Chimere Smith in Las Vegas, Nevada. His mother was of African American descent and his father was of African American and Chinese descent. His parents separated when he was two years old. Ne-Yo moved around a lot as a child, living in Las Vegas, Arkansas, New Jersey and Texas before settling in Atlanta in his teens. Career Ne-Yo began his music career writing songs for popular R&B singers such as Marques Houston, B2K, Mary J. Blige and Faith Evans. He also wrote songs for the popular girl group the Pussycat Dolls. In 2006, Ne-Yo released his debut album “In My Own Words” which featured the hit single “So Sick” which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The following year he released his second album “Because of You” which also saw success with the single “Because of You” reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Since then Ne-Yo has released five more albums with many successful singles such as “Closer”, “Miss Independent” and “Let Me Love You”.Collaborations Ne-Yo has worked with many popular artists over the years including Beyoncé, Rihanna, Pitbull and Trey Songz. He has also written songs for artists such as Jennifer Hudson and Celine Dion.Awards & Accolades Ne-Yo has been nominated for numerous awards throughout his career including Grammy Awards, MTV Video Music Awards and BET Awards. He has also won awards such as the Soul Train Music Award for Best R&B/Soul Album for his album “In My Own Words” and the ASCAP Pop Music Award for Most Performed Songs for his single “So Sick”. Personal Life Ne-Yo is married to model Crystal Renay Smith whom he met while shooting a music video in 2014. The couple have two children together and live in Los Angeles. Ne-Yo is also known for his philanthropic work with the Make A Wish Foundation, UNCF and Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
