Oscar D'León: Venezuelan Musical Icon

Oscar Emilio León Simo, known professionally as Oscar D’León, is a Venezuelan musician born in 1945 in Caracas. He is best known for his sensational salsa music that has captivated audiences around the world. His career has spanned over five decades and he is still performing today. Oscar has been awarded numerous awards worldwide for his contributions to Latin American music.

Early Life and Career Beginnings

At the age of 10, Oscar received his first accordion from his father and he quickly developed a passion for music. He learned to play various instruments including the trombone, guitar, bass guitar and piano. Oscar began playing professionally at age 15 and by the time he was 17 he had already joined his first orchestra. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s he performed with various ensembles such as Orquesta América, Orquesta La Solución and Orquesta La Billonera de Pacho Galán.

Rise to Stardom

In 1976 Oscar released his first solo album 'Llegó la Salsa', which was an instant hit with audiences. This album featured some of the most iconic salsa tracks of all time such as 'La Cartera' and 'Llorarás'. This was followed by a series of successful albums throughout the 1980s which helped to cement him as one of the leading salsa artists of the era.

Later Career

In the 1990s Oscar continued to release hit tracks such as 'Échale Salsita', 'El Negro Bembón' and 'El Muñeco de la Ciudad'. In recent years he has collaborated with numerous other Latin American artists such as Chucho Valdés, Rubén Blades and Willie Colón. His latest album 'Soy Latino' was released in 2017.

Awards and Legacy

Over the course of his career Oscar has received numerous awards for his contributions to Latin American music. He has been awarded a Gold Record Award from RCA International Records, a Gold Disc from Fonogram Colombia and a Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005. Oscar continues to be one of the most recognisable figures in Latin American music today.
