Ray LaMontagne: A Brief Biography

Ray LaMontagne is a Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter from Maine. Born Raymond Charles Jack LaMontagne in 1974, he is best known for his soulful folk music and distinctive voice. LaMontagne has released eight studio albums since 2004, including Trouble, Till the Sun Turns Black, God Willin' & the Creek Don't Rise, Supernova and Part of the Light.

Early Life

LaMontagne was born in New Hampshire, but grew up in Maine. He was inspired to pursue a career in music after attending a concert by Stephen Stills in the late 1990s. LaMontagne then began playing guitar and writing songs. He eventually recorded a demo tape which was sent to a number of local radio stations, leading to airplay and recognition from the local music scene.

Breakthrough with 'Trouble'

In 2004, LaMontagne released his debut album Trouble, which featured the hit single “Trouble”. The album received critical acclaim and was a commercial success, reaching number 14 on the Billboard 200 chart. Following this success, LaMontagne released five more albums between 2006 and 2014. These included Till the Sun Turns Black (2006), Gossip in the Grain (2008), God Willin' & the Creek Don't Rise (2010), Supernova (2014) and Part of the Light (2018).

Collaborations

LaMontagne has collaborated with several other artists over the years. These include K.D. Lang on her 2008 album Watershed and Norah Jones on her 2009 album The Fall. He has also been featured on tracks by rock band Tired Pony (2010) and folk trio Nickel Creek (2014).

Later Career

LaMontagne has continued to record and tour throughout his career. In 2017 he released Ouroboros, an album of instrumental pieces featuring guest appearances from My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James and Wilco bassist John Stirratt. His latest album Part of the Light was released in 2018. It features 12 tracks and has been described as an 'introspective' work that reflects on the human condition.
