Roberto Tapia is a Mexican singer, songwriter, and producer. He’s won a Grammy Award for Best Regional Mexican Music Album for his album El Muchacho (2012). He’s also had several hits that have made him one of the most popular regional Mexican singers and songwriters in recent years. His songs are often emotional ballads that tell stories of unrequited love and heartache.
Early Life & Career Beginnings
Tapia was born Roberto Tapia Meza on February 27, 1975, in San Diego, California. His parents were originally from Sinaloa, Mexico. At the age of three, his family returned to their hometown of Culiacán. It was there that he grew up listening to the sounds of regional Mexican music. At the age of 15, he began writing songs and performing at local talent shows. By the time he was 19, he had already released two albums – Siempre Contigo (1995) and En Vivo (1996).
Breakthrough Success
The success of his early albums led to him being signed by Fonovisa Records in 1998. He released his first album with them, titled Simplemente Lo Mejor. The album was a success and spawned several hit singles such as “Mi Niña Traviesa” and “Cómo Duele”. The following year, he released his second album for Fonovisa titled No Vale La Pena Llorar. The album was an even bigger success, with the lead single “No Vale La Pena Llorar” becoming one of his biggest hits to date.
Recent Years & Collaborations
In recent years, Tapia has gone on to collaborate with some of the biggest names in Latin music such as Yandel, Lil Rob, Cosculluela, Joss Favela, and Banda Sinaloense MS de Sergio Lizarraga. His most recent album En Vivo Desde Culiacán was released in 2019. The album was recorded live at his home in Culiacán and features guest appearances by many of the artists he has collaborated with over the years.
