Who is Scotty McCreery?

Scotty McCreery is an American country music singer-songwriter from Garner, North Carolina. He rose to fame after winning the tenth season of American Idol in 2011. He has since become one of the most popular country music stars of the past decade and has released five studio albums over the course of his career. His most recent album, Seasons Change, was released in 2018.

Early Life and Career Beginnings

McCreery was born on October 9, 1993 in Garner, North Carolina to parents Judy and Michael McCreery. His parents both worked in the medical field and were supportive of their son's musical aspirations. He began singing as a young child and was a member of his church choir. He was also a part of a local children's theater group called “Theater in the Park” at Raleigh’s Pullen Park.

American Idol

In 2011, McCreery decided to try out for the tenth season of American Idol. He auditioned with Josh Turner’s “Your Man” and quickly became a front runner in the competition. After making it to the finals, he faced off against fellow contestant Lauren Alaina and won the competition with more than 56 million votes cast for him.

Post American Idol Success

After winning American Idol, McCreery signed a recording contract with 19 Recordings/Interscope Records and released his debut single “I Love You This Big” which debuted at number 11 on the US Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. His debut album “Clear As Day” was released in October 2011 and debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart. The album was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

Recent Years

In 2012, McCreery released his second studio album “See You Tonight” which debuted at number one on both the US Billboard 200 chart and US Billboard Top Country Albums chart. The album featured two singles that made it onto the US Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. Since then, he has released two more albums: “Christmas With Scotty McCreery” (2013) and “Seasons Change” (2018). His latest single “This is It” was released in April 2019.

Influences

McCreey has cited artists such as Josh Turner, Keith Urban, Kenny Chesney, Brad Paisley and George Strait as major influences on his music. He has also been influenced by classic country singers such as Johnny Cash and Hank Williams Sr. He has said that he is a firm believer in traditional country music and does not believe in straying too far away from classic country sounds.
