Early Life

Reis was born in Rio de Janeiro, where he started to play guitar at age 14. At 15 he began to write his own songs and only a few years later he was already performing in local clubs. He moved to São Paulo in 1956 and shortly after formed a duo with fellow musician Luís Carlos Sampaio. The group released their first album two years later, which was very well-received by critics.

Career

In the 1960s, Reis began to collaborate with other Brazilian music icons such as Milton Nascimento, Tim Maia and Chico Buarque. These collaborations helped him gain recognition among music fans not only in Brazil but also in other countries. He released his first solo album in 1972 and since then has released dozens of albums that have gone on to become classics of Brazilian pop music. In addition to his solo work, Reis has also collaborated with artists such as Gal Costa, Maria Bethânia and Caetano Veloso.
