Who is Shangela?

Shangela is an American drag queen, actor, singer and dancer whose real name is D.J. Pierce. She is best known for competing on RuPaul's Drag Race three times and appearing in A Star is Born with Lady Gaga. She was also featured in the film Hurricane Bianca 2: From Russia With Hate. Her career has spanned TV, music, film and stage.

Early Life

Shangela was born in Paris, Texas on November 22, 1977. Growing up, she was interested in performing arts and participated in various plays and musicals throughout school. She attended Southern Methodist University where she earned a degree in theater.

Career

Shangela began her career as a drag queen in 2009 when she was chosen to compete on RuPaul's Drag Race for its second season. After her elimination in the first episode of the season, she returned for the third season of All Stars where she won two challenges. She also appeared on RuPaul's Drag Race for its sixth season and was runner-up for the All-Stars 4 competition.

Music

Shangela released her debut EP “Welcome to Shangela’s House” in 2018 which included her single “Pay Me” which charted on Billboard’s Dance Club Songs chart. She has also released several singles including “Working Girl” featuring Alyssa Edwards, “Call Me Laquifa” featuring Trixie Mattel and Katya Zamolodchikova and “Uptown Fish” with Manila Luzon.

Film

In 2018 Shangela starred in the film A Star is Born with Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper. She has also appeared in films such as Hurricane Bianca 2: From Russia with Hate (2018) and Dumplin' (2018).

Awards

Shangela has been nominated for several awards including a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program for her work on RuPaul’s Drag Race. She also won Best Newcomer at the National Film Awards UK in 2019.
