Early Life and Career
O'Connor was born in Glenageary, Ireland on December 8, 1966. She began her career early on, playing in local bands in Dublin while still a teenager. In 1987, she released her debut album The Lion and the Cobra which achieved critical acclaim. The single “Nothing Compares 2 U” became an international hit after being covered by Sinead herself as well as other artists such as Prince.
Mainstream Success
In 1990, O'Connor's second album I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got became a commercial success, reaching number one on the UK Albums Chart. It featured the hit single “Troy” which earned her a Grammy Award nomination for Best Alternative Music Performance. She followed up with two more albums in 1992 and 1994 respectively before taking a break from recording music.
Later Career
O'Connor returned to recording music in 1997 with her fourth album, Faith and Courage. She continued to release albums over the next decade including 2002's Sean-Nós Nua which featured traditional Irish songs as well as covers of modern pop songs. Her most recent studio album is How About I Be Me (And You Be You)? which was released in 2012.
Personal Life
O'Connor married journalist Nick Sommerlad in July 2001 but the couple divorced in 2004. She has four children from three different relationships. In recent years, she has been open about her struggles with mental health and has discussed her diagnosis of bipolar disorder. She currently resides in Dublin.
