Who Are Sister Sledge?

Sister Sledge is an American disco group formed in 1972 and composed of four sisters: Debbie, Joni, Kathy and Kim Sledge. The girls are the daughters of Edwin and Florence Sledge from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Sister Sledge rose to fame in the late 70s with hits like 'He's the Greatest Dancer' and 'We Are Family'.

Early Career

Sister Sledge began singing in church and performing around Philadelphia at a young age. In 1972, they released their debut single 'Time Will Tell' on the small Philly Groove label. The single was followed by two more records before signing with Atlantic Records in 1976.

Breakthrough

In 1979, Sister Sledge released their breakthrough album 'We Are Family'. The title track became a massive hit, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and No. 1 on the R&B chart. The album also featured hits like 'He's the Greatest Dancer', 'Lost in Music' and 'Thinking of You'.

Later Career

Since the success of 'We Are Family', Sister Sledge has released several albums and performed around the world. They have worked with well-known artists such as Chic, Stephen Hague, Grandmaster Flash and David Bowie. In 2004, they were inducted into the Dance Music Hall of Fame.

Legacy

Today, Sister Sledge is considered one of the most successful disco groups of all time. Their music has been used in films such as 'The Wolf of Wall Street' (2013) and TV shows such as 'Glee' (2009-2015). They have won numerous awards including Soul Train's Lifetime Achievement Award (2002) and Radio Disney's Hero Award (2008). Their classic song 'We Are Family' has become an anthem for unity.
