Who is Soulfly?

Soulfly is an American heavy metal band based in Phoenix, Arizona, founded by former Sepultura frontman Max Cavalera in 1997. The band has released 11 studio albums, one live album, one compilation album, three EPs and one DVD. Soulfly's musical style has been described as groove metal, thrash metal and nu metal.

History

Soulfly was formed in Phoenix, Arizona in 1997 immediately after the split of Max Cavalera's previous band Sepultura. The band released their debut album in 1998, entitled Soulfly. The album featured guest appearances from Fred Durst (Limp Bizkit), Chino Moreno (Deftones), Sean Lennon and other musicians. This album reached number 79 on the Billboard 200 Top Albums chart. Their second album titled Primitive was released in 2000, reaching number 75 on the Billboard 200 Top Albums chart. In 2003 the band released their third album titled 3 which featured two singles that were charted on the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart for 11 weeks each.

The current line-up of Soulfly includes Max Cavalera (lead vocals and rhythm guitar), Marc Rizzo (lead guitar and backing vocals), Mike Leon (bass guitar) and Matt Young (drums). The band has had a number of different lineup changes over the years, including former members such as Logan Mader (guitar), Roy Mayorga (drums) and Dave Ellefson (bass).
