Introduction

The Drifters are one of the most iconic music groups in history. Founded in 1953 by Clyde McPhatter, they have been performing their beloved hits for over 60 years. The group has had many personnel changes throughout the years, but they’ve never lost their signature sound. Early Years

The Drifters were formed in 1953 by Clyde McPhatter. He was joined by members Bill Pinkney, Charlie Thomas, and Johnny Moore. Together, the quartet recorded their first hit single “Money Honey” in 1954 which reached number one on the R&B charts. The group continued to release hit singles such as “Such a Night” and “Honey Love” throughout the 1950s. However, in 1958 Clyde McPhatter left the group and was replaced by Ben E. King.

The 1960s

In the 1960s The Drifters released some of their most successful singles including “Save the Last Dance for Me” and “Up on the Roof”. These songs became instant classics and are still played today. The group also experienced personnel changes with new members joining and leaving the group throughout the decade.

The 1970s and Beyond

In the 1970s The Drifters continued to record and perform together. In 1976 they released a disco version of their hit song “Kissin’ in the Back Row of the Movies” which was a huge success. They also collaborated with other artists such as Rudy Lewis and Bobby Hendricks. In 1981 The Drifters were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame cementing their legacy as one of the greatest music groups of all time.
