Who Are The Flaming Lips?

The Flaming Lips are an American rock band from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, formed in 1983 by frontman Wayne Coyne, bassist Michael Ivins, guitarist Mark Coyne, and drummer Richard English. Popular for its surrealistic lyrics and psychedelic soundscapes, their music has been classified as alternative rock, neo-psychedelia, space rock, and experimental rock. Since their formation, the band has released fifteen studio albums and won three Grammy Awards.

The Early Days

The band's first release was a self-titled EP in 1984. Their first album was Hear It Is (1986), followed by Oh My Gawd!!! (1987). In 1989, their album Telepathic Surgery generated some attention for their unique style of rock music. The album featured a number of tracks with an experimental psychedelic sound and surrealistic lyrics. After this release, the group began to tour extensively across the United States and Europe, quickly building up a devoted following.

Mainstream Success

In the early 1990s, The Flaming Lips continued to gain popularity with the release of their albums Hit To Death In The Future Head (1992) and Transmissions From The Satellite Heart (1993). These albums featured a more pop-oriented sound and generated several hit singles such as “She Don’t Use Jelly” and “Turn It On”. The band's sound continued to evolve throughout the decade with albums like The Soft Bulletin (1999), Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (2002) and At War With The Mystics (2006). These albums featured a more sophisticated and layered sound than their earlier releases.
