The National was founded in 1999 by friends Matt Berninger and Scott Devendorf after they moved to New York City from Cincinnati. The two were soon joined by twin brothers Aaron and Bryce Dessner, who both play guitar and keyboard. The foursome recorded their debut album The National in 2001 to positive reviews but limited commercial success. The band continued to release albums throughout the 2000s, including 2005's critically acclaimed Alligator and 2007's Boxer.
