Formation
The Specials, also known as The Special AKA, are an English 2 Tone and ska band formed in 1977 in Coventry. The band's music combines a mixture of ska, punk, and rocksteady with lyrics that often deal with social and political issues. The original lineup consisted of songwriter/keyboardist Jerry Dammers, vocalist Terry Hall, guitarist Roddy Radiation, bassist Horace Panter, drummer John Bradbury, and vocalist Neville Staple.
Early Career
The band released their debut single “Gangsters” in 1979. The single was a huge success, reaching the top 10 in the UK Singles Chart. This success was followed by their debut album The Specials which hit number one on the UK Albums Chart. Other hits from the album included “A Message to You Rudy” and “Do Nothing”.
Later Career
In 1981, The Specials released their second album More Specials which featured the hits “Ghost Town” and “Stereotype”. The band then went on to collaborate with other artists such as The Selecter, Madness, Fun Boy Three and The Beat. In 1984 they released their third album In the Studio which featured the hit single “Free Nelson Mandela”.
Legacy
The Specials have been credited as one of the most influential bands of the 2 Tone era and have had a huge impact on British music. They have influenced many artists including Blur, Arctic Monkeys and Franz Ferdinand. They continue to tour to this day and are still considered one of the best live bands around.
