The Early Life of Todd Rundgren
Born in Philadelphia on June 22, 1948, Todd Harry Rundgren was the son of Ruth (Minnemann) and Harry W. Rundgren. His father was of Swedish and Austrian descent, while his mother was of German and Austrian ancestry. Raised in a middle-class family, Rundgren had a chance to study music from a very young age. He started playing guitar at the age of eight and soon began taking piano lessons.
Rise to Fame
In 1965, Rundgren formed the band Nazz with three other members. Although the band didn't have much success, it helped him gain recognition as a talented musician. In 1969, he released his first solo album, Runt. This album established him as a solo artist and featured some of his most popular songs, including ""We Gotta Get You a Woman"" and ""I Saw the Light"".
Successful Music Career
During the 1970s, Rundgren released several successful solo albums such as Something/Anything? (1972), A Wizard A True Star (1973), Initiation (1975) and Hermit of Mink Hollow (1978). He also produced albums for other artists such as Badfinger's Straight Up (1971) and Grand Funk Railroad's We're an American Band (1973). In addition to playing guitar, he also played drums, keyboards, bass and sang lead vocals on his recordings.
Recent Years
In recent years, Rundgren has continued to tour extensively both as a solo artist and with his band Utopia. He has also collaborated with several other artists including Hall & Oates and Cheap Trick. In 2018, he released his twenty-seventh studio album White Knight which featured guest appearances from artists such as Joe Walsh, Robyn and Daryl Hall. His latest album Space Force (2020) was released to coincide with the launch of NASA's Space Force program.
Awards & Accolades
Over the course of his career, Rundgren has won several awards including two Grammy Awards for Best Engineered Album in 1977 and Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package in 2003. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002 and received the Lifetime Achievement Award from ASCAP in 2010. He was also nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2017.
