Tommy Lee is an American musician and founding member of the heavy metal band Mötley Crüe. He was born Thomas Lee Bass on October 3, 1962 in Athens, Greece. He is most recognized for his outrageous stage performances and unique drumming style. He has been nominated for several Grammy Awards and has sold over 100 million records worldwide.
Early Career
Lee moved to California at the age of 1. He began playing drums at the age of 4, inspired by his father’s jazz music. At the age of 16, he formed Mötley Crüe with Nikki Sixx, Mick Mars, and Vince Neil. The band was signed to Elektra Records in 1981 and released their debut album Too Fast For Love in 1981. They achieved massive success with their second album Shout At The Devil (1983) which included hits like “Looks That Kill” and “Too Young To Fall In Love”.
Solo Projects & Later Career
In 1999, Lee released his first solo album entitled Methods Of Mayhem. The album featured collaborations with Snoop Dogg, Kid Rock, Fred Durst, Lil' Kim, and George Clinton. In addition to his solo work, Lee joined rock supergroup Rockstar Supernova in 2006 alongside Gilby Clarke of Guns N' Roses, Jason Newsted of Metallica, and Lukas Rossi. In 2019, he released his second solo album Andro which featured collaborations with artists like DJ Aero and Rob Zombie.

Lee is widely considered one of the most influential drummers in rock history. He has been credited with pioneering the double bass drum set-up that is now commonly used by metal drummers. He is also known for his outrageous live performances including drum solos inside roller coasters, a 360° rotating drum kit suspended from chains, and pyrotechnics. His influence can be heard in bands like Slipknot and Avenged Sevenfold.
