Early Life

Werrason, born Noël Mpiana, was born in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, in 1967. He started playing music at a young age, learning traditional Congolese rhythms from his father. He also studied classical guitar, piano and drums. In 1987, he formed a band called Wenge Musica 4X4 with his friends Adolphe Dominguez, J.P. Buselele, and Lokassa Ya Mbongo.

Music Career

In 1992, the group released their first album and quickly gained success in their home country. They went on to collaborate with renowned African musicians such as Papa Wemba and Tabu Ley Rochereau. As the leader of Wenge Musica 4X4, Werrason has released dozens of albums over the years. His music draws from a variety of influences including Congolese soukous, Latin music, funk and jazz.

International Success

In 2000, Werrason made his international debut with the album “Force d’Intervention Rapide” which was released in France. Since then, he has toured all over Europe and Africa. His popularity spread to North America after he performed at the Montreal International Jazz Festival in 2003. In 2008, he was featured on the album “Kinshasa Madingo” by French producer Manu Chao.
