The Early Years of Zubeen Garg

Zubeen Garg is an Indian singer-songwriter, music composer and actor who was born on 18th November 1971 in Jorhat, Assam. His real name is Jatin Garg and he has two siblings, Anurag and Anuradha. He is the son of Prakash Chandra Garg and Bhupati Garg. He commenced his musical journey at the age of 5 when he first began to learn playing the tabla from his father. He was trained in Hindustani classical music by Ustad Naba Bhatta. After mastering tabla, he started learning the guitar and harmonica. He was inspired by the works of legendary singers like Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar. Zubeen also had an inclination towards Assamese folk songs and Bollywood music.

Music Career

In 1994, Zubeen released his first album Anamika which became a huge success. The same year he sang two songs in the film Satya which further catapulted his popularity. In 2007, he acted in the film Mission China directed by Zaman Habib which was based on the partition of India in 1947. In 2012, he launched his own music company called ‘Zubeen Music’ where he composed music for films such as Mission China, Rongmon (Assamese Film), Kharkuwaad (Hindi Film) etc. He is also a successful playback singer and has lent his voice to many popular films such as Gangs of Wasseypur (2012), Coke Studio (2013), Bajirao Mastani (2015) and many more.

Achievements

Zubeen has been honored with several awards including The Pride of Assam Award in 2006 by Government of Assam and The Bharat Gaurav Award in 2011 by East Cultural Association. He is one of the most famous singers in Assam and has been a part of various social causes as well. His notable works include uniting all communities living in Assam through his songs and always being an active member in creating awareness about social issues.
