History of Black Pumas
The duo met in Austin, Texas at a writing session in 2017. Burton was a newcomer on the Austin music scene, having recently moved from Los Angeles. Quesada had been a part of the Austin music scene for decades as the founding member of Grupo Fantasma and Brownout. The two quickly connected over their shared love of classic soul music and began writing songs together. In 2018 they released their self-titled debut EP to critical acclaim. The EP featured five songs including their breakthrough single “Colors” which was featured in an Apple commercial and was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best American Roots Performance. Their debut album was released in 2019 and included their hit single “Fire” which was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance.
