Bombay Jayashri is a South Indian classical music artist who has been performing for over 25 years. Born in Chennai in 1970, she is the daughter of the mridangam maestro T.K. Murthy and granddaughter of musician T.R. Rajarathnam Pillai. She has performed in India and abroad, including at numerous prestigious venues like the United Nations Assembly Hall in New York and the Royal Albert Hall in London.
Early Life and Education
Jayashri began learning Carnatic music from her mother at the age of three and soon began learning vocal music from her grandfather. She also learned violin from her father and mridangam from her uncle, T.K. Govinda Rao. She went on to receive her postgraduate degree in music from the University of Madras and completed her PhD in music from the same university.
Career
Jayashri started her career as a playback singer for Tamil films and has sung songs for over 50 films. She has also released seven albums and collaborated with many acclaimed musicians, including Sriram Parasuram, Anuradha Pal, Ramanathan Krishnan, Sankaran Namboothiri, A. Kanyakumari, Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman, Tiruvarur Vaidyanathan and Mavelikkara Prabhakara Varma.

Jayashri has won numerous awards, including the Padma Shri (2012), GIMA Award for Best Devotional Album (2013), Filmfare Best Music Director Award (2014) and BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music (2015). She was also awarded the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by the French Government in 2013.
