Wood started his music career as a session singer in the early 1960s. He recorded for several labels including Imperial Records, where he released his first single in 1965, ""Do Your Thing"". After signing with Double Shot Records, he released the hit single ""The Oogum Boogum Song"" in 1967. The song reached number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. That same year, he also released his second hit single ""Gimme Little Sign"", which reached number 9 on the same chart.
