Carla Bruni was born into a wealthy family in Turin, Italy. Her mother was Marisa Borini and her father was Alberto Bruni Tedeschi. Her mother was a concert pianist and her father was a composer and industrialist. She has two older siblings, Virginio and Francesca. She also has a half sister from her father's previous marriage. At the age of seven she moved with her family to Paris, France.

Carla Bruni began her career as a model at the age of 19. She quickly gained fame for her beauty and appeared on the covers of magazines such as Vogue and Elle. She also worked as an actress in films such as L’Aube à l’envers and Les Morsures de l’aube.
